Monkey Disco

monkeydisco

A good little letter recognition and memory improvement app.

In this game you have to repeat back the random letters you hear to make the monkeys dance,

It starts off with a couple of letters and as you progress you get more letters and the time goes down more quickly.

When you get the correct letters the monkeys bust a dance move on the dance floor – the graphics on this one are quite nice on the eye, nice and bright to catch the younger child’s eye.

Another app that could be so much more – if only the developers had put a bit more effort into this to make it better – maybe spelling out words instead of just a jumbled mixture of letters, the game also only uses capital letters.

Overall my son enjoyed playing with this one and found it quite challenging towards the end, it took him quite a few goes.

Pro’s
Easy to follow instructions
Easy to use
Bright animations

Con’s
Could be used to spell words
Only focuses on capital letters

Face Feelings

facefeelings

Face feelings is a short emotion matching game.

It has 5 levels with 3 questions in each level that ask you to match the emotions to the faces.

There are number of emotions such as happy, sad, shy, angry silly, sleepy and you use your hand to spin the face until you get to the correct one.

As you progress through the game it gets slightly harder – level 1 you spin the whole face, level 2 you spin the eyes and mouth separately and then it moves on to a cartoon face with more facial expression.

This game is aimed at 4-6 year olds, however my 3 year old managed to complete this in a little under 5 minutes and then promptly said “I don’t want to play that again!”.

This game could have had a lot more thought put into it and more than just 2 faces would have made it exciting, a better incentive to complete the levels would also have made it more interesting, maybe some sort of animation or talking about the emotions that people can feel.

Globe

Globe

This is a great little app that will provide plenty of learning fun for kids who are just starting to learn about the world.

It’s like a Google Earth for toddlers! There’s plenty of places to go and plenty of things to see.

The 4 sections include
- World Map, which includes all the oceans and continents
- Country Facts, which has photo’s and interesting facts for lots of countries
- Capitals, which has photo’s and shows you the names of various capital cities around the world
- Languages, this teaches phrases such as Please, Thank you, Friend, Hello & Good-bye from lots of places

My son has spent quite some time exploring and learning about different places, he especially loves learning how to use his manners in lots of different languages!

At first I thought the app has some room for improvement, it could have been a lot more detailed, however I think for the younger age group it’s aimed at any more detail may well overwhelm them.

Overall this has been one of the more interesting apps and is very easy to navigate and use.

Pro’s
Easy to understand
Plenty to do

Con’s
Could have more photo’s and countries

Letter Pooch

Letter Pooch

Letter Pooch teaches you how to write letters using you Innotab and the stylus pen.

Follow the gopher who’s dropping snacks and if you get all the way round without going off the edge of the letter you win!

This app looks great…unfortunately it’s a little bit trickier than it looks for the little ones, if you accidentally touch any part of the Innotab screen with your hand or knuckles as you trace the letter then you have to start again – this made it very difficult and frustrating for my son as his little knuckles kept touching the screen as he was using the stylus.

The voice in this app is American and after each letter is completed it goes on to tell you a word that begins with that letter, you also get a star rating out of 3 depending on how many tries you had.

The app only has capital letters, it would have been greatly improved if it included small letters as well, as this would give your children everything they need to learn to write.

For some reason this game comes under the Other category, however I would describe it as a game, not sure why Vtech have put it in a different category.

Pro’s
Easy to understand
26 Levels (one for every letter)
You can go back to letters you have already tried

Con’s
Frustrating if little hands touch anywhere else on the screen
Only capital letters are included
